pump too powerful for box filter

Postby knba.rowe » Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:48 pm

My question is simple and i think i may be possibly answering it myself!

If a submersible pump was attached to a filter box that could be overwhelmed by the amount of water being pumped into it would the best way of reducing the pressure be by fitting a 'Y' connection and spurring off back to the pond for the fish to excercise against, or is there another recommended way of doing things.
Obviously the main aim would be not to overload the filter and UV.

cheers all

yep that would be one way the other is to still use the y piece to split it in to 2 then add a second filter box for extra filtration or even a home made bakki shower if your diy is on form

Hi kev

AS rochey , has said , T it off and run a bakki , , not sure on the size of your pond , but if you have a pump thats plenty of go in it , then use this to your advantage !!

There's plans on the forum for a DIY bakki shower , there very easy to make , and if you build it big enough , in the summer it will be the only filterage you'l ever need , and the benifits far out way any disadvantages :D

one thing you'll have to watch and is often forgot .... The water will choose the easest path which you may end up not filtering as much water needed for your pond ;)

You could do that but your pond would have got use to the 2 filters then if you remove one you could well end up with more problems as you pond would have aclimatised to the 2 filters and you could then end up with a rise in ammonia and nitrate and so on.

And as mark said the flow when T will find the easy rought when i had a pump to powerfull i added a bakki shower off a t pice and the flow would still go to the filter and not the shower as the pipe had to raise to the shower so i put an inline tap in place to control the flow half to filter and half to the bakki shower it worked but now i have the right size pumps for each filter thumright

Hi Dan,

I hear what is said about the pond getting used to having 2 filters and to take one away might cause probs, but say one of the filters is oversized for the pond ( can never overfilter right? ) - so if i do control flow to oversized filter AND smaller filter using a tap on each inlet WHEN i do take away smaller filter for Q and the larger filter suddenly has more water going to it than it had before ( not being overwhelmed because it is slightly oversized remember )...would i still get probs...the way i see it is i would at no time be reducing the overall filter flow at any time.

cheers

i see what you are getting at now there is no good time to cut filterage but once your pond is being fully fed and the filters are coping this is the time when the pond is running full max this way both filters will have the goodies to re grow at the rate needed with as little affect on your pond as possible
