Sudden death of freinds koi

Postby stuart » Mon Jan 11, 2010 11:31 am

A pal of mine has phoned me this morning and he has lost all 10 of his koi but none of his orfe .been up to check levels and nothing semed out of the norm ph was 7 but dont know what it is normaly, pond had been frozen over but i told him to melt a hole that was last week so don,t know how reg he,s done that.if it,s lack of oxygen don,t you think the orfe would have gone first,he has turned the filter off against my advice but not sure if that has any bearing . could it be just down to the temp, not a proper koi pond but has been running for about 4 years and the fish were all about a foot long .nothing on the outside of the fish looked bad as i went up this morning and had a look at them.he.s proper gutted.any idea,s

I lost one of my fan tailed fish, a comet, I think. My 2 koi and orfe ok, so far. Pond frozen. Thankfully a small hole appeared to scoop out the dead fish.
I have been running my hose in to try to up the temps a bit...
Filters still on.

Thats is very strange !!!

As you say , orf should have pegged it first , if i remember rightly orfe are a true cold water fish , related so it could be there a bit more geneticly programed for the cold weather , not realy sure on what else it could be ??

sorry

sorry i over looked this thread some how ......

1.a filter should never be turned off
2.the cold we had was mad and need to protect from it
3.if his pond has natural food in it the koi would have eaten it
4.O2 is contain better in cold water so i would doubt it would have been this [unless the filter was the only means]

The list goes on im sorry that this has happend but as we say people learn from there mistakes :o OMG im turning into peter [god bless him]

Think that turnig the filter off was a big mistake as it was the only form of air ,think poss broke the ice with force , and didn,t put a cover on pond . . but he,s one of my customers so only so far you can tell someone off without costing me money..think he may listen next time round.

My local Fish farm,, who I visited recently, said a LOT of their regular customers had severe fish loss due to the recent cold weather.

The filter was turned off?...
That is never good....
For a start, it would mean all the bacterial action would die off, that may even freeze up, and the waste from all those dead bugs would be toxic as well........

Spoke to loads of people who have lost fish this winter all uncovered and all said the same ..they always been ok in the past..think it has just been so much colder than normal and for so much longer than normal ..mine seem ok no heating but 3 ply poly cover.turned the air pumps off when it was really cold as the air temp was so much lower than the water temp ..flter is still airated so plenty of oxygen in the water.checked the parameters the other day and all seemed fine.. allways a relife when you not checked for a bit or to be honest done much to the pond at all..figured when it was that cold adding new water that was colder than the pond was not a good idea ..and its cold on the mits to if the truth be told..
