Max air bottom drain!

Postby flyingfox » Thu Jan 28, 2010 10:24 am

I bought an aerated bottom drain, the paperwork says “the maximum recommended air flow through the unit is 20LPM/Metre of depth.

I have on order the 95 and 130 Aerator airpump from Boddington from EA. As they are 95 and 130LPM won’t they be FAR to powerful for my bottom drain. It is the Spindrifter that Boddington does by alternative aquatics.

My plan was to use 95 for Nexus and 130 for the BD in summer, then divide the 130 for both in winter.

Your thoughts?

I have sort of asked this before, but this time I have info on what the instructions say is max output!!

I just spoke to the BD manu. it is 20LPM per M of depth, so for 2m deep = 40LPM from pump.
It will take more, if needed.
So need to again decide on which of the 2 air pumps i use. The 130 is too much for BD! That is defo. The 95 is border line, too much jacuzzi??!!
So i may down the 90 pump to 70? for BD.
and do I keep the 130 for Nexus, and get more K1 in 310... or get the 95 air pump for Nexus? So down size both air pumps.
Defo want 2 air pumps for "security".

OK, I have a few boring workings...

The EA air pump 75 is a no go. At surface it pumps 75LPM, 1m down 60LPM, that is a loss of 15LPM, so at 2m it could be 45LPM.

The EA 95 air pump at 1m depth is 80LPM, so my guess for 2m deep is 65 LPM. That sounds ok to me.

I was told not to restrict the out put of the air pump, if its too much, put a Y connector on and let some go to "waste".

So now I have to decide if to use the 130 on Nexus or change it for the 95... plenty of time!!

OK, here's another direction... I know you can get one pump and split it two ways. Easy.

But, can two pumps be put into one place. Just a daft idea / question i know. Say could I use the 95 on BD, as that will lose quite a bit by the time it reached the BD, but if it was too much could I divert some to my Nexus, which will also have an air pump going to it. Can you sort of upside down the Y? Like 2 pumps into one line... just thinking out loud I think that makes sense

Nice to have lots of options

tony chilllllllll !

get the bigest pumps , this way you can tweek your bd's and other air flow , always better to have more , than not enough , plus ...... no such thing as air going to waste !!

just grab your self some y's t's,valves, and air stones , and if you have excess of air , just throw a few more air stones in , when your pond hits 18C and above , there's not such thing as to much air !! if your pond hit's 25c , which has been known in the uk  you'l be begging for all the air you can get ;)

Dont know how long this has been on but i,d say the more air the better your bound to lose quite a bit of pressure by the time it,s been pumped down to the depth you want and the distance from the air pump to the bottom drain.also check out the wattage cos i got a koi air 65 thats 60 odd watts and 1 that i cant remeber the name of off ebay thats 60 liters and runs off 35 watts, dont sound much but beleive me when you got it akk up and running you will be wanting to keep it low as poss..also after running the koi air for a year then finding the others it means i can run 2 air pumps for the price of 1 and she,ll never notice the electric bill go up ..ha ha
