The modern Kohaku started with Ogawa's Loulan
Prior to that, N0-ONE had seen such Shiroji ( white ground )
Ever since then .... unless a Kohaku is snow white ... it's no good

firstly the number of RECOGNISED NAMED patterns is amazing !
then you learn that as a Kohaku grows .... the beni ( red pattern ) has to stretch ....
any small scallops of white will expand .....( like splits in the red )
any hi plates just touching .... will separate !
AND it will also lift as it grows !
I'm fascinated by Kohaku !
just a true BUT funny story .... AND A WARNING TO NEW HOBBYISTS ....
having looked at pictures ... before my pond was completed ... time for some Koi !!!
had arranged with the dealer for me to buy and pay for from the Autumn Harvest and him to keep until pond completed ,
heated .... so although landscaping not completed until December , it didn't matter ! I would wait running the system with no fish !
decided to buy 5 ..... then make sure I could look after them properly ...
one of my first choices was to be a Tancho Kohaku ... I had asked the dealer to get a good one at the Autumn Harvest !
he had got a PERFECT Tancho Kohaku !!! Tosai ( up to 1 yr old ) red circle in the middle looked painted on !
BUT I HATED IT !!! I REJECTED IT !!!
I chose one with a FULL tancho marking covering its head !
WHY
.... IGNORANCE
I did NOT realise the shitty browny yellow around the circle was normal for a tosai,
that it was in fact the scull showing through the very thin skin !!!
so chose the one with a full red head !!!!
I had spent a year prior to then ..... reading books and magazines and watching DVD's and NEVER come across that so didn't know !!!
If only the dealer had explained ....... but he probably thought let him buy the one he wants .... the perfect one is EASY to sell !
I wonder how many new hobbyists have rejected young koi because of the shitty browny yellow head
not just Kokaku ..... Shiro Utsuri .... Becko..... Sanke .... Showa .... Goromo ..... anything
