To be honest Alex, I know you said you were going to wait till sat to treat, but I personally wouldn't. From the things I hear about Costia, I'd get that dose of PP in as soon as you can. I think you would have enough time to watch them for a good few hours before it goes dark, real light nights at the moment. I think the warmer weather and waiting is perhaps going to be against you in multiplying numbers before sat. I had hoped you'd pop back into chat.

Which ever course of treatment you decide, wait or not. Again I'd stop feeding the fish now. Because pp will kill everything in the pond bacteria wise and any food will raise the bad stuff to toxic levels. I found this the first time I used it, and badly burned two of my chagois with high nitrite etc. Took 12 mths for the marks to go.

Check out some of my older threads and can see the process and what I went through. I have everything crossed for you and your fish. Pp is great stuff, but hard work to recover from afterwards and no food then little is the only way. Peter, bless his heart, helped me so much through that really bad patch.

Speak soon,

Dawn

Costia for sure.

I personally have given up using PP for costia. If your organic load is off, you will need to repeat the treatment multiple times, back-to-back, in order to get the 5-6 hours active treatment time that's required to kill the little beasts. I only ever use formalin/malachite for costia now. One dose, UV/ozone/zeolite/nitrate-hash/active carbon etc etc out the pond before dosing. Wait 24 hours then refresh a good 10-20%.

Infact, i've pretty much given up using PP for anything these days. Only very heavy infestations of trichodina would I consider it, and even then after battering the fish with PP, the trich is back within a week or two.

It's horrible stuff, it's not as effective as it once was and in the wrong hands, it can be deadly. Even when you do everything 100% perfect, the odd fish can react bad to the D.O drop, even at low doses.

That is where experience comes in. I used pp for a very heavy load of trich, and because of the plant life in the pond it did take several doses to stay active long enough. I still put too much in for the sturgeon they didn't like it at all, but with some nursing, they were fine.

Hope you can sort it though Alex, good luck.

Keep us informed.
